What is Acupuncture, is it safe?
Acupuncture is an alternative therapy and component of Chinese Medicine. It involves the insertion of very fine needles into the skin and muscles, for the treatment of various medical conditions.
Acupuncture is a safe treatment, using sterilised, single-use needles. All licensed Acupuncturists are required to undertake the highest quality of training and follow strict codes of safe acupuncture practice, professional conduct and hygiene standards.
I am a registered member of the AFPA, meaning I meet Ireland’s upmost standards of safe practise.
Does Acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture is a gentle and safe treatment, tailored to each individual client. Some areas may be more sensitive than others, but it should not be painful. I use specialised needles to ensure the most comfortable treatment, they are thinner than a human hair.
Always let your practitioner know if you are scared of needles, so the treatment can be tailored accordingly. There are also many other aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine that can be used in treatment that don’t involve needles; such as Gua Sha, Cupping, and Moxa.
How should I prepare for my appointment?
Make sure to eat something at least 2 hours before your appointment. Try to avoid caffeine in this time also. Wear loose fitting clothing, but be aware you may need to dress down to underwear depending on the treatment. In this instance you will be provided with a towel.
How many treatments will I need?
Each Acupuncture appointment is tailored to the individual client, thus every treatment plan is different. It is important to note that Acupuncture, and any holistic approach to health, is not a quick fix!
For any issues relating to the menstrual cycle, I recommend starting with at least 4-6 weekly sessions. If you are trying to conceive, ideally begin a course of Acupuncture 3 months prior to TTC.
Is Acupuncture safe during pregnancy?
Yes, and I recommend it! Acupuncture can be used throughout pregnancy, from pre-conception to post-natal care, and is completely safe. If you are not coming for fertility acupuncture specifically, but you are trying to get pregnant, always let me know as some points are contraindicated in pregnancy.
How will I feel after my appointment?
This may be different for everyone, but usually people feel relaxed yet energised. You may feel hungry or tired, so if you can, make some time to rest afterwards. Make sure to stay hydrated and keep warm to support the body’s healing process.
Sara is a member of AFPA all major insurance companies can cover acupuncture treatments too, depending on the client's policy. We will provide the client with a receipt for claimback.
